Helen Nodding’s Moss Graffiti Recipe

(enough to create several small pieces or 1 large piece of graffiti)

1 can of beer (others use yogurt or buttermilk)
1/2 teaspoon sugar
Several clumps garden moss

You will also need a plastic container (with lid),
a blender and a paintbrush

To begin the recipe, first of all gather together several clumps of moss (moss can usually be found in moist, shady places) and crumble them into a blender. Then add the beer and sugar and blend just long enough to create a smooth, creamy consistency. Now pour the mixture into a plastic container.

Find a suitable damp and shady wall on to which you can apply your moss milkshake. Paint your chosen design onto the wall (either free-hand or using a stencil). If possible try to return to the area over the following weeks to ensure that the mixture is kept moist. Soon the bits of blended moss should begin to re-couperate into a whole rooted plant – maintaining your chosen design before eventually colonising the whole area.

wonderful, and mind blowing, except the moss bathmatt.Couldnt step on moss like that. What wonderful ideas.

I want to know how to do it. I've heard that mixing moss with yohurt and painting it on does the trick,

but I haven't had much success.

Lars-Birger Odenlid

Astonishing and inspiring - Thanks!

Two questions:

Do you know that´s there are a whole city named Moss in Norway?

Do I hear a symphony by Mozart in the background of your Moss art web site?

So creative and beautiful! Happy Earth Day!

'We cannot segregate the human heart from the environment outside us and say that once one of these is reformed everything will be improved. Man is organic with the world. His inner life moulds the envrionment and is itself also deeply affected by it. The one acts upon the other and every abiding change in the life of man is the result of these mutual reactions...' From the Writings of the Bahai RFaith

This is soooo nice!

What a beautiful thing to see in the morning 🙂

The best garden inspiration I've had in years. Thank you so much, and my garden thanks you. If I am successful with the plans you've planted in my head, photos to follow. Again, thanks, Sandy

I have seen a few of these...a few I want to make here on my 12 acres. I LOVE moss and the way it makes you feel. I love walking barefoot on mine as well!

I love the coffee table container of moss. I want to do something like this!

I found a rock in a dry creek bed by my house with two eyes and the mouth that are moss.Do you have a e-mail I can send you a photo of it.The rock is 25' long 14' wide and about 125 pounds. The face is 5' acrost. Its real and not touched.Thank you.

I just have to say that all this art is beautiful and fills me with a sense of wonder and whimsy. A feeling I cherish VERY MUCH!

So again, thank you so much.

We have so much moss on our property I want to try doing something on the old tractor cab we have at the end of the drive. Hope it works on the inside as well. I'm excited to get started.

moosarts are very interessting !

i have green devils flower mantis ! if you want to take a look

here is my homepage

Great project!

I was wondering, would this work on canvas? I was hoping to add some green to my room and I think this project would be wonderful...

Lettme know!

Really interesting question.

If moss grows on rocks I would think it would definitely grow on canvas. I think the question is, would a gesso ground prevent the canvas from decaying and becoming moldy on the back. Moss needs a bit of water here and there, so I think a cotton canvas with watered moss on top would last but a couple of years. Canvas with a heavy gesso, maybe a a couple years longer... Only guessing... Sounds like great fun though... maybe masonite or wood would last longer.... Any other opinions out there...please chime in.

So wonderful i love arts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love the 'edging' on your website with up close pictures of plants, many of them variegated! I am a horticulturalist, who LOVES variegated plants, and would like to know the english (and latin if you have it) names of these great plants. I don't recognize some of them...

Thank You!

I love all the moss art projects. Think I'll try to do a small one or maybe a chair

Tina gutierrez

Cool, mossy creations for a shady spot!

I was wondering why I don't see any Irish Moss in any of the pictures. I have just finished planting 70 irish moss plugs between flagstones and in a sunny area and am hoping that it will grow to be a beautiful site. How come you don't use it? Thanks.

I agree Irish moss is gorgeous... I probably didn't add an image because I have yet to find one I love... (I just googled irish moss and did not see any images I would want to add to the page.)

I wish your Irish Moss well and if the area planted turns out spectacular...please do send a picture. In the future I will keep my eyes out...

Hope your plantings do really well.

thank you for sharing and compiling this!
