Natural Pools Or Swimming Ponds

stop swimming in chemicals: build a natural pool
Let nature clean the water…

Chemical-free water garden and swimming pool. The plant portion, or regeneration zone, is separated from the swimming area by the wall seen a few inches below the water’s surface.

natural pool
The pools have skimmers and pumps that circulate the water through the regeneration zone and back into the swimming area. The aquatic plants filter out contaminants and use nutrients from the water as food, which helps prevent algae. Then rocks, such as granite river rock or haydite, to which friendly bacteria attach, act as biological filters. More questions answered here: &

There are many design options. Beneficial bacteria (micro-organisms and microbes) colonize the rock and help cleanse the water. (

This video from natural pool expert David Pagan Butler is an introduction to what he calls “wild swimming at home.” His pool or pond costs a fraction of traditional construction. It requires no special contractor to do any of the work. And no chemicals are needed to keep it clean. In the video he shows his homemade innovations: insulating the swimming zone to keep it warm, building a noiseless pool filter from scratch, and the solar-powered circulation system. The wall of the pool is made of sandbags and wood. Beyond is the “planting zone,” which is an equal area to the “swimming zone.” Animals and plants in this zone act as natural filtration to keep the water clean.

A gradual slope contains the plants, gravel and loamy sand, a wall keeps them separate from the swimming area.

Vacuum but twice a year and tend to the plants as needed. The plants will need to be cut back in the fall so they do not die in the pool. (

natural pool
The regeneration zone can be along the perimeter of a natural pool or a pond unto itself, as long as it’s connected to the swimming area. (

natural pool
For a true natural pool with no help from ultraviolet light or other such technology, the requirement is half-swimming area, half-regeneration area. (

Plants steal the nutrients away from invasive algae. (

This time-lapse video shows the construction of a natural pool on Nantucket Island, off of Cape Cod. Once the barriers of the pool are staked out, a machine digs out all the dirt. Then the liner is laid around a temporary wood frame. A barrier is built to separate the swimming area from the natural plants area, and forms laid out for the pouring of concrete. The sides and bottom of the pool are concrete. Once the concrete is poured, the forms are removed. The filtration and water pumps are arranged. The earth is filled in around the pool, and stones are placed along the exterior for a more natural look. A lining is applied to the bottom and sides of the pool. Then, it is slowly filled with water. At the end of the video the final product is shown with the landscaping. Beautiful.

A first year pool will need at least 60 days to self-adjust, but installing an ultraviolet sterilizer in the pump area will have you swimming almost immediately. (

Andy Marsh of Georgia shows off the natural pool he built. He says he did all his research online. His pool is lined with gravel, the water circulates through the gravel, and microbes in the gravel help filter it. It looks really clean! He shows the divide between his swimming area and planting area. As he’s in Georgia, with a warm climate, his planting area is the same size as his swimming area (in colder places you might get away with a smaller planting area). Under everything is a rubber membrane. Most of the stone lining the pond is a gray granite he was able to get 10 tons of for $300! He used 18 tons of gravel for the pool.

The pools are most popular in Austria, where a company called Biotop has been designing them for residential and public use since 1986. (

The two-tiered waterfall helps oxygenate the pool. (

natural pool
A hybrid natural pool usually has two circulation pumps. One where water is circulated through the plant and rock filters before being discharged back to the bottom of the pond. The second surface circulation system pulls water through one or two skimmers filtering out floating debris. Water drawn through the skimmers passes through a filter system, such as a UV filter and/or a biofilter—essentially a box filled with bacteria-laden bio-media—before returning to the pool. A waterfall helps with oxygenation. (South Africa:

This natural swimming pond was built in Central Illinois, along with 400 meters of hugelkultur beds—in just 10 days! The walls of the pool are giant cinder blocks, with tamped sandbags adding extra height. Gravel was poured along the sides of the pool for future landscaping. The designer, Zach Weiss, explains that adding oxygen is very important for natural pools, so he built in a waterfall, fed by a water circulation device. The stones blocking the water also help release oxygen. The material Zach excavated to form the pool, he used in the hugelkultur bed. No waste! The property is going to be a bed and breakfast.

Conventional pools can also be converted to natural pools; above is an internal conversion. (

Here is a conversion in Australia from a 1980s style brick-pool to a natural pond. The conversion was done by the homeowner, but with help from the company that produced the video. He explains that the “power-hungry” pumps of traditional pools are replaced by low-power pond pumps. They used the existing skimmer box to run lines for circulation and to add oxygen. Even in the offseason the water quality stays good. They don’t have to pump chemicals in to keep it clean in winter. The pond has biofilters that are incredibly clean even after 18 months of use. The equipment is small and practically noiseless. Low-maintenance and self-sufficiency = inexpensive and simple life.

Plants For Your Natural Pool

Every pool needs to be cleaned. A natural pool is cleaned with plants instead of chemicals—have you ever thought about how many pounds of chemicals go into a typical swimming pool?

A range of aquatic plants are used—submerged (oxygenators), floating, shallow marginals, deep marginals, bog/marsh and waterside species. Whenever possible, use indigenous plants. Some examples of typical water plants: cattails, bulrushes, sedges, duckweed and water lilies.

thats nice look like very beautyful . all r like this type pool. also good for health. b,coz its ful of green plantation

snake and turtle bites are going to happen alot with this

These look so much better than a regular pool. Why would anyone want a sterile, caustic, artificial blue pool when you could have one of these lush, green natural swimming holes.

The only question I have is does algae grow in it?? It looks kinda green...

hah, that's the most paranoid thing to say about these pools.

Love it!!! awesome pics

call it paranoid but when i mention this to people their first comment is ' iam scared of snakes'

Anyone know a contact in Ohio that can consult on a natural pool project?

bugs like crazy?

I love having fish in my pond but I don't know if I want to swim with them. I have frogs and salamanders too. The pictures are amazing. So beautiful. Can I get my head around swimming with critters.

very neat Would keep the clorine from coulering my hair.

These are truly amazing as a landscape architect I would love to incorporate these into my work! I knew that aquariums around the world use technology like this on a much larger scale, but i never thought about it for freshwater private owners!

Amazing, I love it and want one now! 🙂

awesome images......

Beautiful scenery is shown above the pictures.

this is awesome i have never seen anything like it but it has been my dream to do something like this for years. where i was raised and now live 30 miles from but both always surrounded but water, I've learned water is water and you are used to swimming in beaches and rivers and pools (natural) springs, creeks, craters that filled when it rained excessively. so why not make your own and be creative about it and make its multifunctional. bravo, these are beautiful!

Cornellius Deng

these are awesome....

These are so beautifull, really stunning!

Anita-Jean Anderson

How well would a natural pool, such as the ones shown, do with a Utah winter? Also, would it be possible to incorporate fish (such as Koi) into a design or would they pose a health risk ? And, I thank you all for bringing such a wonderful idea to my attention !!! Sincerely, Anita

Hi Anita,

Thanks for writing. Natural swimming pools are already very popular throughout Europe, including northern Germany and in the Swiss Alps. A public pool opened near Stockholm, Sweden in 2010. I would guess the only place they might not work is in extreme latitudes where a short growing season would prevent proper filtration, that sounds really far north though.

As to fish, bacteria counts in a natural pool will be much lower than in a natural lake, so I do not see why not. You would need to feed them though, as much of their natural food is being filtered away. I personally would wait until after the food is consumed before going in! I would also consider not doing any real swimming or splashing in the pool as I am sure this would scare or possibly harm the fish, unless the pool is large enough and they have time to go and hide. Best, K

Are there any companies in NY that do this?

Wow! These pools are awesome but it's a little scary specially when you are used to the pool's blue-colored water. Anyway, what pool pumps do these use? Can I use a or is there a preferred type for this?

Great site! Please check out our website and tell me what you think! I hope these pools infiltrate (haha) the US soon!

Please like us on FB if you do! 🙂

@Brenda, Biotop now do a 'living pool' with a blue pool liner (though I prefer the grey, personally) that functions the same as the natural pool but looks like a traditional pool.

@Anita Jean! Let your natural pool/pond freeze over in the winter, but make sure if you build it's large enough so that you can ICE SKATE on it :). In our system, you just literally turn off the pump and that's it.

Oh, and no fish - they' have too much impact on water quality! 🙂 Have a separate pond next to your swim pond for your fish.

These things look like a Mosquito Haven ... without fish to eat the larva or chemicals to repell them .

Mosquitoes are eaten by their natural enemies, such as water striders, damselflies, larvae, etc.? Mosquitoes breed in still and stagnant water, as opposed to the living and flowing water which is present in a natural pool.

Fernando De Haro

Can you heat the pools?, what effect does to plants?

Rare to find a plant that likes 90 degree water in the summer and freezing temps in the winter. Depends on your climate. If in a cold clime, you would have to overwinter all the plants indoors!

@fernando. The natural pool is designed in such a way that it warms itself. The shallow regeneration and plant filter areas warm quickly in the sun and the free flow of water into the swimming area can raise the natural temperature of the whole pond to 28

@Keiren, you don't have to over-winter! We are in Central Eastern Europe where we have hot summers and cold winters, the plants are just thinned out in the fall and bounce back to life in the spring 🙂

We are a Social Foundation in Valle de Bravo, Mexico, I wish you could tell me if you can help us to make an ecological pool in our place,or if there is a distribuitor here in Mexico. Please send me the address. Our website

it's very beautiful

Don/Glee Papczynski

We have a koi pond that is now 6 years old and mature enought to have a successful biosystem with a bog that works much like the plant/filter area. I can definately see how this would work and I want one! I am hoping I can talk hubby into it. Frogs and snakes may show up but hey don't like the splashing a person makes in the water and they clear out. It's all part of the fun in knowing it is healthy and clean! Thank you for the inspiration! I'm in Indiana - any help near us?

I am in IN too! Let me know if you find a local person who installs natural pools

All I need now is a garden big enough to install one in.

And the money to pay for it to be done.

Thanks at lot for your site. Would send me more information about natural recovers or sintetyc recovers but adecuate for my spool?

I just wanted to comment on a few things:

(1) Water is a chemical, so saying it's free of 'chemicals' is kind of silly.

(2) Sunlight is comprised of UV rays, so saying that you would get a 'true natural pool with no help from ultraviolet light' is silly, unless you plan to erect a natural shield of jungle plants over your pond that completely blocks out all sunlight, of course.

(3) Putting the word 'natural' in front of everything is a bit like trying to paint bat guano gold and passing it off as the next christmas-tree ornament craze. A bit silly no?

(4) It sounds like there is a lot of maintenance to be done with these Natural Swimming Pools, or NSPs (because everything needs an acronym to sound more official). Is there any way I can just let some water fester in my backyard and do without the expensive gizmos that filter the water to make it safe and healthy like most modern non-NSP pools do? You see, I'm going all natural: duck feces, insects, and all. I'm just wondering how I could write a book and make a few bucks trying to sell this to anyone who has money to burn. Any ideas?

Water is not classified as a "chemical" it is classified as a "molecular compound." The term "chemical" in general usage is generally intended to mean something manufactured vs. something occurring in nature. Yes I realize that's not technically true - but it is from the 'Chicago Manual of Style'

@marian 1) Pointing out the fact that water is a chemical is just being a smartass. I'm thinking the company was hoping people weren't that ignorant to take things so literally.

2) Again, over-analyzing a comment which was referring to UV light that h

These pools are great! Does anyone know any buider in Spain? We are a group and we want to create an ecologic village, it would be nice if we could have something like that.

wow, never imagine of this pond could be so lovely like this....amazing. Thumbs up

I live in Tampa Florida and have a 10,000 gallon pool in the backyard. It has been raining pretty much every evening for the past month, so I stopped putting chemicals in it. We now have tadpoles in the pool. My wife jokingly said that she always wanted a pond in the backyard. I started researching pools being converted into ponds and stumbled upon this website. I would love as much information as possible. Thanks

Thanks Inspiration Green,

Hope the other topics are as interesting.

Marian (reply#44 below), your post looks somewhat cynical but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume your query is serious.

Ducks are not recommended they carry human gastro. pathogens especially if there are sources such as sewage ponds nearby(30km). I have exeperience of mountain lakes 3 days walk from the roadend that are unfit for drinking from because of this.

If you let the water fester it is likely to do nasty things to your skin as well as stink, but it should be possible to achieve swimming quality water without electric pumps by using gravity (slop over a bund) to force filtering and convection (by heating and cooling) to force circulation. Having said that a 12 volt bilge pump is dirt cheap and moves surprisingly large amounts of water.

it should be possible to achieve swimming quality water without electric pumps by using gravity (slop over a bund) to force filtering and convection (by heating and cooling) to force circulation.' - Graeme

Where can I find this? I am most interested in passive design, which doesn't rely on electrical intervention to work. Are there other potential methods to accomplish this too?

does anyone know the exact function of the river rocks/aggregate in the filter area?

Excellent work.

estela salvatierra

Beautiful natural ponds, wish to make one in my house.

It is a gift to enjoy swimming like if we were in nature

Is everything slimey like in natural ponds. I can't even think about stepping into slime. *shudder*

Can someone help me? I had a lot to make a shrine where I can retire and other who does not had a place can come and visit too.

can you explain how big the tubes need to be and type of pump needed. I am in the process of installing a pond and saw this natural pool. I would like to change my design. Is there anyone in Costa Rica that has done one of these pools? I could offer free stay for some help here.

Do you work in Costa Rica?

Patricia Twitter: @patriciastreete

These are the types of pools you see on MTV cribs. These photos are amazing. Thank you for the insperation!

But how about evaporation here on the Equator?

wow, living in a dessert, this looks absolutely amazing! Enjoy your water features!

I LOVE the swimming pond idea but i am nervous about building one in South Texas where a poisonous snake, the Water Moccasin is quite common.

They're beautiful but too many straight lines for 'natural' pools.

I have an indoor pool, but really hoped to put in a lap pool outside. This would be a terrific way to do this. We would probably need a separate pond to satisfy the lovely Blue Herons, but that can be easily done. All would be in keeping with the natural and green place we are fortunate to have, and add to our sons' inheritance and love of this wooded and field place where they have grown.

Is the liner absolutely necessary? I have an existing pond that would not be too difficult to separate a deep side for swimming, and a shallow side for plants/filtering, but would like to avoid the added cost of a liner.

About seven years ago I wanted a swimming pool. Yet, I wanted it to look natural. Be natural. What you have created .. words can not express my feelings. Bravo! Thank you. Now I know how to begin.

Love it! 🙂

what effects will urine, drinks, sunblock, hair products, food, and other random unnatural crap that might find its way into the pool have on the plants and quality of the water?

Send me information Thank you

Zach Petersen

Please send me anything and everything regarding building and photos of these types of pools. They are absolutely beautiful! Thanks,

This is awesome and I would love to be able to build one of these in my yard. Any information would be great. Can't wait to learn more about this. Thanks!

We love the idea of a swimpond but are concerned about the sand that will accumulate at the bottom of the pool-pond from the extreme winds in the New Mexico area- New Mexico being a sandy desert - Any advice?

Looking forward to hearing from you soon -

hi, thanks for the ref. you could refer people to our new website as well: for many more images of pools.

Hello! I would love to have a natural swimming pond in Saskatchewan but I have concern about how it would fare given that we are in zone 3 where the winters get very cold. What do think?

Paulette Harrison

Hi , just wanted to ask what things need to be knowen for building a natural pool in a tropical location. Im in Broome WA Australia. Have there been other pools done in this kind of area ? Do love this web page and so glad i found it

We have a swimming pond like that, having a hart time keeping the algaes out and having nice clear water.

What can we use to make it clear and keep it clear???

Leigh Jackson, Jacksonville Fl.

For what seems like a year I've been searching for some kind of instructions that would tell me how I can convert my built in cement pool into a bio friendly pond, chemical free. Everybody wants to sell you the instructions. I don't have the money to pay everyone for info that doesn't tell me anything more then what I can see and guess from web photo's. There are not that many naturists left in the world I guess, that just want to share the love because it's the right thing to do for the environment. Anyone have a suggestion, a link, a video, something that will tell me things like: will I need to raise the level of my pool or what plant are the best for natural algee filtration.

A Natural Swimming Pool can be built in any climate that water and aquatic plants coexist. Use the plants that are native to your area and you will have a healthy regeneration area. Providing that it is designed and built right.

How much does electric bill go up to keep the stream going 24 hours all summer long? Also, not really clear how to clean it every month (seems like a lot of maintenance). Other than that, looks pretty neat!

These companies use the same copycat technology. What you missed in your photos are the most natural ponds I've seen. Since we aren't allowed to use links here, try doing a search for natural ponds lakes and streams by spring creek aquatic concepts. There you will see what you really desire. Their ponds seem cleaner and a lot more natural appearing. It could be because they are actual Biologists.

Michael Newhouse

Anyone in Costa Rica that can convert an existing pool for us?

We have a large swimming pond with a concrete like bottom. Above we have the plants, waterfall and bubbler in the main swimming pond. It sounds like a lot has been done right. However, the bottom has probably a foot of mud like dirt and muck. How do I get this out of the bottom? We have used a net to remove it from the shallow ends, but there is too much in the deep end and the nets are not strong enough anyhow to withstand the weight. Please help with any advise.

that is just so beautiful, I would love to try that in a big farm dam that already exist, is that possible?

Please if you can help me with some advice. At the moment I try to arrange the garden. I also want to set up a pond. Specifically that the land is sloping and on the slope have lake . Pond at the moment is filled with small natural spring water and has a depth of 0.5 m I want to dig to a depth of 2 m is also filled with mace . Wonder if there sap springs give even more ? Pond being in the slope when it rains very hard water in the yard is it possible to drain even if terrace land . My idea would be to do it in a more natural , without PVC film or membrane and structure it with natural stone and sand on the bottom and the sides of stone rock . I think that the film becomes unsightly with time and in case of leaks in the pond can not be filed only on the bottom and no filters anywhere. Maybe there is the possibility of draining the lake in summer , spring flow depends here I need to check . But that would be the ideal solution ? I'd go with the 100 % natural . How do you advise me ?

Bentonite clay will work as well as a poly liner if the layer is thick enough...

Patricio Brockmann

Who can you recommend for a Job like these in Mexico ?

I was just wondering if there is anyone in Victoria, Australia that does these amazing pool ponds.

anyone doing this pools in Spain? thanks, they look lovely !

These are sooo beautiful! Can't wait to build ours!

Muy buenas ideas.

Queria saber si hay alguien en Argentina que haga estas piletas!

We are building a house in the equatorial region of Africa in the tropical rain-forest. As we are trying to maintain the biodiversity of this area, we would like to build our own water reservoir/natural swimming pool. However I'm concerned about that the temperature will be too high for us to take a dip in it. Would planting trees in tree-islands and around help or is it failed attempt already?

Any suggestions are gratefully appreciated.

Sir/mam I have a form land & I am interested in constructing a natural swimming pond ,please help me to have technical guidance. From your side

I am in Minnesota, United States. How do these pools/ponds hold up in extreme cold winters with the freezing. Do these ponds stay open? Do the plants do well with freezing? Any recommendations ?

Thanks for your impute

Beautiful! Creating a habitat, instead of destruction of habitat. What a welcome change! You have inspired me!My fish are going to enjoy a more interesting environment, and I may attract some frogs too! V exciting!THANKYOU!

My company, Zortacular Dreamscapes (, will travel to your site anywhere in the world and build your natural pool or convert your existing pool. We have trained with Total Habitat (, the first natural pool builder in North America, and we are able to keep your water clean with an unpatented system that costs less than the patented systems sold by our competitors. We have many success stories.

we will like to know if one of your designs will suit and appox how much it could cost please.

Do they work for tropica/humid/caribbean climates?

Pond Pro 2000

A small swimming pond can be build into backyard. You can enjoy swimming and can gain peace of mind and relaxation by sitting across it.

Love these! Definitely on my 'if I ever win the lottery'/ dream home list. Such a beautiful way to have a personal place to swim. 🙂

Of course it would work. But can you afford it? Like one commenter said, when I win a $M, it'll be the first thing I do. Add an aerator to the bottom, and you could have fishing, as well. Build it big enough, and you could add a motor boat. Put in a big fan, and you could even sail a boat.

I suggest you go to a real lake or pond to swim, just like most people do. Get real.

I have a question about the filtration system in the regeneration area is the system available or can it be made with PVC pipe? I was thinking of doing a concrete pour with drainage trays you would use in a driveway and running PVC conduit to pump station via manifold. Will this work or is there a different system under the stone?

This does not have to be so complicated. I installed a wetlands filter in my Koi pond 17 years ago and the pond is as clear as tap water. I have large Koi, some over 30' and as one would suspect, they product a considerable amount of waste. The natural wetlands filter works perfectly and there is NO maintenance. My fish pond is 14' x 17' and 4 feet deep so I am confident that this would work perfectly for a larger body of water.

I was just wondering if you had a list of natural pool builders in Portland Oregon (NW USA). Thanks!

Jill Mack

What a dreadful shame there are no supplliers in NZ!!!! I'd love one so people could came and see what an amzing idea this is.

Atlantis Pool create an inviting environment while highlighting lighter areas such as a beach entry. Design a refreshing, clean environment with cool hues or create a dramatic look with darker tones.A product of the international market which has seeped into the Indian markets, the natural pools have surely become a talk of the town and are the most preferred and sought option by lot of builders, constructors and individuals and is seeming quite promising.

Natural bodies of water attract frogs which snakes love, hope everyone likes the feel of slimey algae covered rocks becaues that's what's in natural ponds. Don't have party's & invite a heap of friends over for a swim as your natural pond doesn't like having an overload of bathers. They seem to b very popular in the cooler climate regions of Europe. Wonder how they'd go over here in Australia, say central Queensland where summertime temperatures are a standard 45+ c degrees. Why do people keep trying to reinvent the wheel ? Stick to the most efficient tried & true salt water chlorination systems. By the way they don't produce chlorine, they produce hypochlorous acid. A gas that can't b seen or smelt

what is a cost effective way to put ledges for plants in an existing inground pool?

Well, they look nice. But you won't get me in one - because I don't care how many natural plants and everything else you put it in - it's still going to be fresh water full of potential pathogens, parasites, and other horrid things you don't want inside of you. Really bad idea- all the bad stuff of pond water without enough water volume to really filter any of it. I'll pass.
